s of papers 7 25 Alloantigen system L affects antibody responses. Z. O. Medarova*1, W. E. Briles2, and R. L. Taylor, Jr.1, 1Department of Animal and Nutritional Sciences, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824, 2Department of Biological Sciences, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL 60115. Alloantigen system L encodes a polymorphic 135kD protein expressed on the surface of chicken erythrocytes and possibly certain leukocyte subpopulations. Previous work found L system effects on Rous sarcoma fate, cecal coccidiosis, and phagocytic function. The present study examined the L system influence on antibody responses to two antigens: SRBC (T-dependent) and Brucella abortus (BA, partially T-independent) in three B complex genotypes. The parental stock were 50% Modified Wisconsin Line 3 x White Leghorn NIU Line 4 and 50% Inbred Line 6-15.5. Pedigree matings of 4 B2/B5 L1/L2 sires to 5 B2/B5 L1/L2 dams per sire produced experimental chicks segregating independently for B and L genes. Three hatches totaling one hundred and eighty three experimental progeny were tested for antibody response to SRBC. A total of one hundred and ninety eight progeny from two hatches were tested for antibody response to BA. At 4 and 11 weeks of age, the experimental birds were injected intravenously with 1 mL of 2.5% SRBC or 0.1 mL of 10% BA. Microtiter agglutination procedures were used to measure total and mercaptoethanol resistant (MER) antibody following primary and secondary immunization. All titers to both antigens were analyzed by least squares ANOVA. In the B5/B5 background, the L system had significant (p < 0.004) effects on total primary antibody to SRBC. Both total (p < 0.011) and MER (p < 0.017) secondary antibodies to SRBC were significantly influenced by the L system in the B2/B5 background. Total (p < 0.004) and MER (p < 0.005) secondary titers against BA in the B2/B5 background were affected significantly by L genotypes. The data indicate that the alloantigen L locus or genes in the immediate chromosomal vicinity affect antibody responses to SRBC and BA.

Effect of Different Levels of Fennel Extract and Vitamin D3 on Performance, Hatchability and Immunity in Post Molted Broiler Breeders

A 3 × 3 factorial experiment with three levels of fennel extract (FE) (0, 50, and 100 mg/kg of diet) and three levels of added vitamin D3 (Vit D3) (0, 3500 and 4200 IU/kg of diet), was carried out to evaluate reproductive performanceand immune response of post molted broiler breeders(76-84 weeks).Broiler breeders were weighed at 10 week after molting (74 weeks) then randomly distributed into 36...

Effects of Long-term Induced Hyperthyroidism on Egg Quality Traits in Cobb 500 Broiler Breeder Hens

Published data on 4-week-long administration of exogenous thyroxine in broiler breeder hens to decline the cold-induced ascites in their progeny suggest that the long-term maternal hyperthyroidism would affect egg quality characteristics traits in Cobb 500 broiler breeder hens. Seventy 47-w-old broiler breeder Cobb 500 hens (5 replicates and 7 hens each) were assigned in separate cages and allo...

Effect of dietary zinc oxide and phytase on the plasma metabolites and enzyme activities in aged broiler breeder hens

Background: It has been shown that zinc has an effect on physiological responses in animals and birds. On the other hand, dietary phytase in poultry results in increased availability of zinc. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) and Escherichia coli-derived 6-phytase supplemented diets on the plasma metabolites and enzyme activities of broiler bree...

Effect of hen age and maternal vitamin D source on performance, hatchability, bone mineral density, and progeny in vitro early innate immune function.

The metabolite 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25-OHD) can complement or replace vitamin D3 in poultry rations, and may influence broiler production and immune function traits. The effect of broiler breeder dietary 25-OHD on egg production, hatchability, and chick early innate immune function was studied. We hypothesized that maternal dietary 25-OHD would support normal broiler breeder production and a ...

Effects of rosemary essential oils and zinc on performance, egg quality traits, and some serum biochemical metabolites of laying hens

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplement-ation of rosemary essential oils (REO) and zinc (as zinc sulfate) on performance, egg quality traits, and some serum biochemical metabolites of laying hens. A total of 144 44-weeks-old Lohmann LSL-Lite laying hens were randomly allocated into four treatments, each comprising six replicates of six birds. The first group was s...
